How to Get Over Heartbreak

The word heartbreak triggers immediate thoughts of loss—maybe the loss of a loved one, divorce, or a broken relationship. But soul-crushing grief isn’t necessarily limited to missing someone close to you.

It could also be a rejection letter from your dream school or a wayward child who won’t return your calls. Your anguish feels like it’s too much to bear and you think, “Where is God?

God wants you to know He is right there beside you and He’ll show you a way through it.

  1. You’re not alone. Despite the agony you feel now, your Heavenly Father has not deserted you. He sees you hurting and aches alongside you. The Bible states, “the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). He knows the tears you’ve cried, and His heart breaks, too, because He loves you. In the Bible, we are reminded that, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed” (Psalm 34:18). Talk to God as you would a friend. He’s listening and wants to hear from you.
  2. You matter. A broken relationship does not define those who find their identity in Jesus Christ. The Bible is clear, “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close” (Psalm 27:10). And when you choose to let God take you in, you become His child. You are adopted into God’s family and get to “share in the inheritance that belongs to his people” (Colossians 1:12).
  3. You’ll get through this. The Bible says, “Despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us” (Romans 8:37). God gave you the desire to love and be loved. He cannot fail you. He will dry your eyes, lift up your head and make it possible for you to get over your heartbreak.
  4. There’s no deadline. Victory is promised through Jesus, but there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for your broken heart. Healing takes time and forgiveness. Evangelist Billy Graham has likened it to recovering from major surgery. Just as your skin, ligaments and muscles need time to heal, so do your emotions.
  5. You will love again. More than just getting through it, God can restore your heart if you let Him fill you with His perfect and faithful love. God created a desire in each of us that can only be filled by Him—then we can experience restoration. God promises to “give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you” (Ezekiel 36:26). That means you can love again. Your heart can be whole again if you choose to experience God’s unfailing love.

Let God heal your heartbreak, beginning with a relationship with Jesus.

Step 1 – God’s Purpose: Peace and Life

God loves you and wants you to experience peace and eternal life—abundant and eternal.

The Bible says:

"We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 5:1

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16

"I [Jesus] came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
John 10:10

Why don’t most people have this peace and abundant life that God planned for us to have?

Step 2 – The Problem: Sin Separates Us

God created us in His own image to have an abundant life. He did not make us as robots to automatically love and obey Him. God gave us a will and freedom of choice. We choose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today. This results in separation from God.

The Bible says:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

Our choice results in separation from God. People have tried in many ways to bridge this gap between themselves and God...

The Bible says:

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."
Proverbs 14:12

"But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear."
Isaiah 59:2

No bridge reaches God... except one.

Step 3 – God’s Remedy: The Cross

Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave. He paid the penalty for our sin and bridged the gap between God and people.

The Bible says:

"For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
1 Timothy 2:5

"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God."
1 Peter 3:18

"But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8

God has provided the only way... Each person must make a choice...

Step 4 – Our Response: Receive Christ

We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receive Him by personal invitation.

The Bible says:

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me."
Revelation 3:20

"But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God."
John 1:12

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
Romans 10:9

Will you receive Jesus Christ right now?

Here is how you can receive Christ:

We suggest a prayer like this one:

"Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I want to turn from my sins, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe He died for my sins and that You raised Him to life. I want Him to come into my heart and to take control of my life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as my Lord from this day forward. In Jesus' Name, amen."
