What Is Wrong With Me?

Why do so many people feel empty inside, like something is missing? They hit their goals and because life is like they imagined, they think everything should be great. When it’s not, they wonder what is wrong with them.

You not only have a mind and body but you also have a spiritual side. That’s because God created you with a soul. Most people spend the majority of their lives nourishing their bodies and pouring information into their minds and yet they starve their souls. When that happens, their lives become incomplete and empty. It doesn’t matter how much money they make or stuff they accumulate.

But what does your soul hunger for? It aches for God—and only God can satisfy that inner craving. God created us so we could have a personal relationship with Him, but when we leave Him out of our lives, there is a blank space in our hearts that will not go away. That space has always been there and we try to fill it with anything and everything. However, only God can fill it. As the theologian and philosopher St. Augustine said hundreds of years ago,

You have made us for Yourself, 0 God, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in You.”

Not only do we need God, but God actually wants us to know Him personally. He wants to participate in our lives and fill them. He wants us to feel His presence and the joy that comes with it. That is why Jesus came into the world. “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God” (1 Peter 3:18).

What must you do? First, turn to God and confess your sins to Him including how you have left Him out of your life. Then ask Christ to come into your heart. Jesus promised, “I stand at the door [of your heart] and knock. lf anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will go in and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). You can know God’s presence right now if you will open your heart to Jesus.

Stop asking “What’s wrong with me” and start asking God “What would you like to do in my life?”

Step 1 – God’s Purpose: Peace and Life

God loves you and wants you to experience peace and eternal life—abundant and eternal.

The Bible says:

"We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 5:1

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16

"I [Jesus] came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
John 10:10

Why don’t most people have this peace and abundant life that God planned for us to have?

Step 2 – The Problem: Sin Separates Us

God created us in His own image to have an abundant life. He did not make us as robots to automatically love and obey Him. God gave us a will and freedom of choice. We choose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today. This results in separation from God.

The Bible says:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

Our choice results in separation from God. People have tried in many ways to bridge this gap between themselves and God...

The Bible says:

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."
Proverbs 14:12

"But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear."
Isaiah 59:2

No bridge reaches God... except one.

Step 3 – God’s Remedy: The Cross

Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave. He paid the penalty for our sin and bridged the gap between God and people.

The Bible says:

"For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
1 Timothy 2:5

"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God."
1 Peter 3:18

"But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8

God has provided the only way... Each person must make a choice...

Step 4 – Our Response: Receive Christ

We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receive Him by personal invitation.

The Bible says:

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me."
Revelation 3:20

"But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God."
John 1:12

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
Romans 10:9

Will you receive Jesus Christ right now?

Here is how you can receive Christ:

We suggest a prayer like this one:

"Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I want to turn from my sins, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe He died for my sins and that You raised Him to life. I want Him to come into my heart and to take control of my life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as my Lord from this day forward. In Jesus' Name, amen."
